Love, Joy, Peace...

On May 6, 1934, Mr. Joe. C. Banks, Mr. Johnnie Moore Jr., and Mr. Charlie Smith conducted a prayer gathering in various homes across the town because there were no black churches in the region at the time. First Baptist Church was founded inside the George Washington Carver School due to persistent prayers and commitment. Rev. Frank M. Corley afterward led a revival. Seven of these persons were accepted as baptism candidates. Mr. Joe Banks, Mr. Charlie Smith, Mr. Johnnie Moore Jr., A.D. Hopkins, Mr. Woodrow Simms, Ms. May Bell, and Hanna Bell Charles were among them. They were christened on Easter Sunday, April 1, 1934. Rev. Frank M. Corley was then appointed as the church's first pastor. Later, a tiny church was erected on the intersection of North Texas and Hamilton Street, which is still there today. It was provided by the Old Taylor Site Company, of which the church had roughly 25 members at the time. Pastor Andy Williams was called to pastor the church in February 1943, and the congregation thrived under his guidance. The church increased in size both spiritually and financially, allowing it to expand on May 7, 1961. Rev. Richard Roberts was appointed pastor of The First Church in 1964. Because of his growing anxiety about the church's structure, the church was bricked in and a spire was added to the top. Other enhancements were done as well. Pastor Roberts, a visionary of his day, aspired to serve and develop the church and the community. Peter Singelton began his religious journey as an associate pastor under the direction of Pastor Roberts in August 1996 and served until his retirement two years later. In the summer of 1998, Pastor Singleton was installed as the Pastor of The First Missionary Baptist Church. Under his zealous leadership, the church transitioned from twice-monthly worship to a weekly worship session every Sunday. Later, a dynamic weekly bible study that matched biblical principles for all ages was introduced. Pastor Singleton's aim and objective as the church expanded was to restore the biblical mandate to the church. On February 17, 2012, a building that fulfilled the spiritual requirements of today's youth was created adjacent to the church as a result of this. The Bible warns us that if there is no vision, the people will perish. The vision will very surely die without individuals willing to undertake the effort. We are really excited about what God will do in the future under Pastor Singleton's leadership.
